How about a walk down to the Castle???

Today was absolutely beautiful, it is sunny and about 80 degrees… I took a walk to the Castle here in Berghausen to have a coffee and to write for a while… I wrote at a little wooden table, with a white umbrella, surrounded by stone walls to protect the castle from intruders… The last two times I have visited here it has been very snowy and cold… Today it was like a fairy tale, the sun is shining, the sky is blue, birds are chirping, and fall is creeping in on the trees and lightly dropping their leaves to the ground…

It is amazing to say I walked to the castle, you never hear people saying things like that back in Oregon, or anywhere in the US at all…

In Oregon I wrote at a local pub owned by Mcmenamins, I love these places, they are charming and unique in a comforting way… I have two favorites Cornelius Pass Roadhouse and John Barleycorn, if you get a chance to visit say hello for me… http://mcmenamins.com/

Fairy Tale Castle

We went to Hohenschwangau this weekend and stayed in a quaint little bed and breakfast…

This is the town where  the castle Neuschwanstein can be found… The castle that Disney modeled their Sleeping Beauty Castle after, and the one that sits in the middle of Disneyland… I thought it was Cinderella’s Castle, but it turns out it is Sleeping Beauty’s, per a friend of mine…

We arrived on Saturday, too early to check in at our B&B, so we headed right up to take the tour of each castle… We walked up to the summer castle of King Ludwig II, and walked through with a charming guide… She had a great since of humor, and was willing to put up with and giggle at my antics throughout our tour… I love to make people laugh… I kept making comments that the beds were very small, and shouldn’t the Queen have a queen size bed, and the King a king sized??? Don’t you think so??? When we came to one of the sitting rooms there was a guest bed with many mattresses, I couldn’t help it, I had to ask… Is there a pea under there??? I thought for sure it would not be understood, between the language differences and all, but she laughed loud, and we giggled about it the rest of the tour… How does it get better than that???

We took the horse and carriage down to town, our driver was very charmed with his horses, and proceeded to tell me their names and to chat with us, he was lovely… Upon arriving at the bottom we had to catch another up to the Fairy Tale Castle… Though there was twelve of us in the carriage it was very charming and romantic… Do you wanna know how I know it was romantic??? I know because a very cute young couple spent the whole time making eyes at each other and kissing… How great is that??? It was really cute…I have to say I rather wished for out first tour guide back, this gentleman was nice enough though he seemed to be in a hurry… It was lovely none the less, and I highly recommend visiting…

After our tours, we headed back to the B&B to check in… She just asked our names, took us up to our room and handed us a key, no proof, no money, just here you go… How does it get any better??? In the US they take all your info and ask you to secure it with a credit card… Not here, just here is your key… We put our stuff in the room, and headed back for dinner in the sweet little alpine town… We picked a restaurant with a patio, so we could sit outside, the food and beer was Yummy!

The next day we went back up to the Castle so we could go out to Mary’s Bridge… Things you should know, I have had trouble with heights in the past… (I say that as if I didn’t go into complete and total meltdown every time I am not in control, and sometimes even when I am)… I have noticed that I haven’t had this issue as much recently… I can actually stand in places and not feel as if I will fall or be sick if I get to close to the edge… I can look over the edge, and still be calm… In order to get up to the castle on this day,  we opted to take the bus, not knowing it’s route… You should also know we were the last two on a very packed bus, the driver had told everyone to push back to the back so as to get everyone on that would fit, sitting or standing… As we climbed this narrow road to the top, I just kept telling myself, this is what this man does for a living Heather, he does it every day, and all day, he knows what he is doing, you are totally safe… I said this through every curve that we took, that looked as though we might be too wide… Patting myself on the back as we approached the top, at how well I was handling all this, and that not once did i freak out, we pulled up to the end, and as I was absolutely sure he was going right over that cliff, I grabbed the bar in front of us and sank as low as I could bracing myself for the decline, and yep that is when he came to a complete stop and smiled at me in the most devious manner possible, and laughed… I laughed too, though I think it might have been more for having not been sick right there and then… How does it get better than that???

The great part was that we were right next to Mary’s bridge and the hike up the hill we had thought we would be taking was only a couple minutes… After all the walking we had done the day before I was grateful not to have to hike uphill the twenty minutes it would have been, and this way it was only down hill we would be doing… Mary’s bridge goes out from one cliff-side of the mountain to the cliff-side of the other mountain… It is a steel bridge with wood planks bolted into it… It is approximately one hundred to one hundred fifty feet down to the bottom… I went out onto this bridge three times and no freak outs, Yeah me… I even had my picture taken out there… What else is possible???

It was an amazing weekend and I could not have planned it more perfectly… How lucky am I???

A weekend with authors…

I had the wonderful opportunity to be and spend time with my friend last weekend… We had planned a get away weekend to the beach before I leap across the pond…
We went to Nye beach and stayed at the Sylvia House B&B… This particular B&B is based on authors, each of their rooms has a different author represented…
I being the Harry Potter fan that I am, was tickled to have the opportunity to stay in the J.K. Rowling room… This room has the canopy bed with the red drapes in the manner of Gryffindor tower… There was a sorting hat, frog spawn, each of the novels of Harry Potter, and even a painting of Moaning Myrtle in the bathroom over the toilet… How does it get any better than this???
This was such a great place, it has many sitting spaces to sit and read… There are several meeting places to interact and chat with other guests… I really enjoyed sitting in the kitchen and working on puzzles and visiting with people as they came through… We also had a chance to visit with people at breakfast, we talked to one couple that had been coming there for 15 years, and they were telling us about their adventures while visiting here… They spoke of reading the different journals from each room… Apparently it is common knowledge to regular visitors that the journals in the Scott Fitzgerald room, are quite racy, to the point of being R rated… There used to be a chair in that room that had inspired many a interlude of magnitude… They said the chair could no longer be found in the house, though there is a cushion in the sitting room made from the upholstery of this chair… They had looked through the pictures of those rooms and searched to find these details…
What would it take for me and my books to be represented in this quaint B&B??? What else is possible??? How could it get any better than that???

Ask and you shall receive…

If you know me at all, then you know I am a bit boy crazy… I love them, I love to flirt and be about the crazy energy of guy… I was in one of my favorite places recently John Barleycorn’s a Mcmenamins Pub, learning to be on my own, just before my journey to England… I have been going over what will happen when I get to Europe, and I am on my own for the first time in this life… I have been making the effort to be willing to go places by myself… In an attempt to be ready for this adventure…
On this particular evening my friends and I were out at Barleycorn, when they decided to go home for the evening… I took them home and decided that I was not ready to go home for the evening, so I went back and sat by the fire out on the beautiful patio writing and contemplating what my adventure would be like when it finally arrived…
At which time a whole bunch of men showed up, about a dozen or so… They were out and about on a double bachelors party, they ordered a bunch of food and beer and they were laughing and having fun… I, like I do, was watching how they were playing and enjoying how they began to bring all the lovely people on the patio together and getting them to talk and interact together… It was completely amazing!!! This is not even the good part…. It got so much better… They began to sing, not just a little but they sang for several hours, and they sang together in unison… They were so full of life and joy, and I was so grateful to have had the opportunity to be along on this adventure… It was when I realized I was already on my adventure, and that I would find friends along the way… How lucky am I???

Leaving Berghausen…

I will be in London Sunday… That is only four days from now… This is our last night in Berghausen… On Friday we will drive from here to Munich and stay for the opening on Oktoberfest… How amazing that this is my life…

Do you ever get that Oh Shit!!!, Feeling in the pit of your stomach??? I get that sometimes when I consider what is coming… I have traveled on vacation alone before, and it was different for sure…  This seems way different… In truth we are never really alone; it is a bit on the freaky side to not have any physical familiars… It feels like a very grown up, yet out of the ordinary… In four days I will no longer have familiar people or places about me… I will have my family and friends as close as Facebook, email, and Skype, though none close enough to hug…

I know I will make friends; still this is a whole new world I am entering…
